At a peaceful time between the two world wars, a group of Kansas City garden enthusiasts envisioned a public garden where they could share their love of roses. Eighty years later the Laura Conyers Smith Memorial Rose Garden in Loose Park is a vibrant testament to what the group accomplished. Laura Conyers Smith was part of a group that founded the Kansas City Rose Society in 1931. The 1.5 acre garden received a circular layout from prominent landscape designer S. Herbert Hare, with ample space for both bushes and climbers. From its original planting the garden has grown to over 3,000 roses with nearly 150 different varieties. Both classic and vintage roses (some with origins dating back to the 1800’s) share space with the latest varieties.

The West Garden was dedicated to the heroes of World War II in 1944. In 2002 a stunning Italian stone fountain became the literal centerpiece of the circle, a visual delight with sounds that entice birds and calm guests. This is one of over 200 public fountains located in Kansas City. From the center courtyard, spokes allow you to view plantings of favorites such as the brilliant red Home Run® and the uniquely hued Cinco de Mayo™. A showy spread of Dream Come True™ lies along the rim, creating a colorful foreground for those walking along the outer path, gazing toward a glistening fountain at the hub. |

The circular boundary of the garden features stone columns connected by heavy chains. The links provide support for climbers to span completely around the garden. Here, century old varieties hold hands with newcomers such as Soaring Spirits™ and Fourth of July™. Seating around the perimeter allows garden guests to linger in different areas with a favorite book or companion and creates a natural backdrop for weddings. |

At the north section of the garden a slightly raised area features an All-America Rose Selections display garden, one of only 130 in the nation. A covered shelter with benches provides a fantastic vantage point to view almost the entire garden. In addition to numerous AARS winners in the main wheel, this area features many recognized favorites such as Weeks Roses’ Julia Child, a spice scented floribunda with buttery gold blooms. Make sure to stop by on your next trip either through or to Kansas City.
